What Does . . . Mean?

Top of this page Autoresponders
Autoresponders reply to incoming eMail automatically. An autoresponder is set up to automatically send out an eMail to the sender. If you've ever received a response to an eMail which suggests that the recipient is away from the office, or that says "thank you for your inquiry" you may have received such an automated response. Set up an autoresponder by logging into your control panel.

Top of this page Cache (Web browser cache)
Back in the old days of extremely slow Internet connections, the web browser cache was invented to store visited web pages and images on your hard drive. The next time you accessed the same web page on the internet, it came up much faster because it was actually loading from your local hard drive and not from the Web server. The only problem with that was that if any of the web page content had changed since your previous visit, you would not see it because you are viewing the cached or saved files on your hard drive instead of the actual Web server files. As broadband Internet access (DSL, cable, etc.) becomes available to everyone, the browser cache becomes more useless every day. And not only do Web browsers still have a cache, the default setting is several MB of files! Set your browser cache to 0!

If we are building a website for you and you can't see new changes, set your browser cache to 0 by selecting Edit/Preferences/Advanced/Cache in your browser's settings. Set the Memory cache to 0 and the Disk cache to 0. Also, in the field that says "Document in cache is compared to document on network", check "every time." You will now always see fresh content when you visit any website, including the changes we make to your site.

Top of this page cgi-bin
CGI (Comman Gateway Interface) is a standard way for a UNIX Web server to pass a Web user's request to an application program and to receive data back to forward to the user. When the user requests a Web page (for example, by clicking on a hyperlink or entering a Web site address), the server sends back the requested page. However, when a user fills out a form on a Web page and clicks send, it usually needs to be processed by an application program. The Web server typically passes the form information to a small application program that processes the data and may send back a confirmation message. Unlike many ISPs, LA Servers allows you to run ANY custom cgi script(s), not having to rely on scripts that they think you should want. All hosting customers have access to a personal cgi-bin directory in which they can place their own custom CGI scripts. CGI scripts are often used to accomplish tasks which are not supported by basic HTML such as a hit counter or guest book. This directory can be used to set up scripts that you write or find elsewhere on the web. We offer a pre-written mail form script, available free for your use.

Top of this page Data Transfer (monthly bandwidth allotment)
Monthly Transfer  is the amount of information that you transmit from your site. (bandwidth usage) This means that each time a picture or HTML page is viewed by a visitor, it adds to your Monthly Data Transfer. In general, any outward bound traffic from a web site, with the exception of eMail, is considered to be data transfer. For example, each time a web page, image, midi file, Real Audio/Video file, etc. is loaded, data transfer is generated.

Top of this page Bandwidth Calculation
(or how many monthly hits can my website receive with my hosting plan?)

Actual number of hits vary depending on the HTML page file size. HTML page file size + graphics total file size(s) + any other files that are on the page must be calculated in the overall size for the bandwidth calculation to be accurate.

Top of this page Disk Storage Space
Disk storage space refers to the amount of server disk storage specifically allocated to your account. This space is used to store your html files, graphics, audio clips, pdfs, and other files that make up your web site. Each of our plans includes a specified allotment of disk storage space. You can purchase more disk space through your control panel.

Top of this page Domain Name Registration
Owning your own domain name will make your URL easier to remember, and therefore easier to find on the Internet. No one will take your business seriously with a URL like http://members.lol.com/~your_username. (If you can't remember it, others won't either)

If you haven't already registered your domain name, register or transfer your domain to LA Servers for $15.00! Check for availability and register domain names.

Top of this page Domain Pointing ("URL Forwarding")
Domain Name Pointers are used to redirect existing virtual domain accounts to another existing virtual account or from one directory/file in an existing account to another directory/file in an existing account. Domain Pointing is helpful if you want to point another domain name to a sub-directory of an existing account. If you do not already have an account to point from, you can sign up for any of our hosting plans. URL Forwarding is can be used when you want a Sub Domain (ie info.yourdomain.com) that will point to a subdirectory of your main domain name (yourdomain.com). Sub Domains are very inexpensive alternative to another domain name since they do not have to be registered.

Top of this page eMail Forwarding
Once your domain name is active worldwide, you can receive all eMail addressed to your domain such as webmaster@yourname.com, sales@yourname.com, etc. By default, all eMail addressed to your domain will forward to your eMail address provided by your local internet provider. For convenience, specific mail forwarding options are available if you need specific addresses each to be forwarded to different addresses on the internet. For example, eMail addressed to webmaster@yourname.com could forward to an account at AOL, but sales@yourname.com could forward to a Prodigy account. Setting up Mail Forwarding can be easily done through your control panel.

Top of this page FrontPage extensions
You can install Microsoft FrontPage extensions to your account through your control panel. This allows you to use the Microsoft FrontPage program to create and maintain your web site. LA Servers not support FrontPage but Microsoft provides direct support for all FrontPage users. Documentation on FrontPage can be found here.

Top of this page FTP Acces
You will have unlimited access to your account via FTP 24-hours a day to set up and maintain your web site. You can work on HTML documents, graphics, and scripts locally and then upload files to your web site when ready.

Top of this page mySQL Database Servers
Depending on the hosting account you have, a fully functional database engine designed to provide fast access to stored data can be set up through your control panel.

Top of this page POP eMail Accounts
In addition to mail forwarding, users have the option to retrieve eMail directly from POP3 mailboxes on our mail servers using an email program such as Netscape, Microsoft Outlook Express, or using our Web-based eMail . Each of our plans offers a specified number of configurable POP accounts. Additional POP3 accounts can be added to your account through your control panel.

Top of this page RealAudio / RealVideo
Real Networks' RealAudio system is a client-server based streaming media delivery system for the Internet. Providers of news, entertainment, sports, and business content can create and deliver audio-based streaming multimedia content through the Internet to audiences worldwide. This is http streaming and not live streaming. If you need to stream extensive live content through our servers, you will need to get a streaming server license from Real Networks.

Top of this page Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
In order to get your site to show up on the search engines, it must be designed to be search engine friendly. We offer complete SEO services.

Top of this page SSL Secure Certificate
SSL (Secure Socket Layer) allows users to collect data such as credit card information in a secure environment. Information submitted via a secure form is sent to the server in an encrypted mode. This requires a secure certificate issued by Verisign or Thawte. Sign up for one of our eCommerce Plans and use our Secure Thawte Certificate for free!

Top of this page Site Statistics
Access your site statistics at http://www.YourDomain.com/webalizer (substitute your actual domain name for YourDomin.com)

Top of this page Secure Shopping Cart System
A Secure Shopping Cart System is a system that allows customers to add items to their shopping cart and continue shopping throughout a web site before finally checking out. When the customer checks out, totals are calculated and shipping, and tax are added automatically. Many more features can be added like coupons, volume pricing, real-time shipping calculation, and more.
