Top of this page A POP eMail account (POP stands for Post Office Protocol) is like having a post office box with your own personal access key. Mail is sent to your eMail address on our server, where it is held until you retrieve the messages. A POP account has it's own username and password. (the personal key part)

To set up access to your LA Servers hosted Domain Name POP account, configure your eMail program (like Eudora, MS Outlook, Outlook Express, OSX Mail or Thunderbird) using the following mail server info:

Incoming Server (POP3): mail.yourdomain.com (substitute YOUR OWN domain name for YourDomain.com)
Outgoing Server (SMTP): mail.yourdomain.com (substitute YOUR OWN domain name for YourDomain.com)
Username: your Email address
Password: your Email Account Password
Check the box that says "My outgoing (smtp) requires authentication" and select "Use same settings as my incoming mail server."

Top of this page What is a Catchall email account and why would I want one?
A Catchall email account collects email from everything@yourdomain.com. These catchall email accounts used to be a good thing as no email would ever bounce to your domain name. But since the widespread spamming of randon users @ domain names, catchall email accounts are usually deactivated by most domain owners. This means that only specified email addresses will receive email and all others (used by spammers) will bounce.

Top of this page What is eMail forwarding and why would I want it?
By default, no eMail accounts are set up - you need to set them up through your web hosting control panel. You can activate your email account's catchall through your control panel at any time. Catchall email accounts are not a good idea these days because of the spamming of random_users@ domain names.

Note: If you are forwarding your domain name eMail to another account (like your Hotmail, Yahoo!, or AOL eMail account - your domain name eMail comes in when you check your other account) and you change ISPs, you MUST change the forwarding of your domain name eMail to your new ISP eMail account through your control panel. Faiure to do this will result in bounced eMail because your old ISP eMail account is no longer valid.

Top of this page Forwarding of Domain Name Email to Outside Email Accounts - All Clients Please Read!
In their quest to control spam, most major Internet Service Providers (like AOL, CompuServe, Yahoo, SBC, RoadRunner etc.) are cracking down on email automatically forwarded to users on their networks. Their systems see a lot of email coming from a single source (like every email forwarded from your domain name email account) and are starting to block the forwarding of it. Some of our clients have already called to complain that they are not regularly receiving their domain name email which is being forwarded to an outside email account.

PLEASE NOTE: We cannot control email that is forwarded to an outside email account once it leaves our email servers. (the forwarding part) We can guarantee that you will receive your email immediately if you use our mail servers and your domain name email.

All of you are professionals - you have your OWN domain names, your OWN websites and your OWN email accounts. You should use them to check and send your domain name email instead of forwarding your domain name email to outside accounts!

*** After all, you wouldn't send business correspondence on AOL, Yahoo or RoadRunner letterhead - you'd send it on YOUR company's letterhead. Your domain email brands your company's name and shows that you are professional the same way as in print. ***

It's really easy to set up an email program on your computer to send and receive your domain name email. See full screenshots on how to set up Outlook Express and Outlook to send and receive your domain name email at http://outlook.LAServers.com.

All other email programs are similar to set up. Basic instructions on the setup of several additional email programs are listed at the bottom of the "Email Administration" page on this control panel under "Email Client Settings".

If for some reason you still don't want to use your domain name email, instruct people to send directly to your outside email account instead of forwarding your domain name email to your outside email account.

Once again, we cannot control email that is forwarded to an outside email account ONCE IT LEAVES OUR EMAIL SERVERS. Unreliable email forwarding results may occur which we cannot be held accountable for.

Top of this page I need email accounts for info@domain.com, sales@domain.com, and me@domain.com. How do I set these up?
Setting up email accounts can easily be set up by clicking "Email Administration" in your control panel.

Top of this page eMail Troubleshooting:
Before you contact us regarding your POP account not working, please check to ensure that:

  1. You have input your Username and Password exactly; these are case sensitive!
  2. You are connected to the Internet. (If you can't get to any website that you have never been to before on the Web using a browser, you're not connected) NOTE: Websites that you visit regularly may be cached in your web browser and may come up even though you are not currently connected to the Internet)
  3. Send an eMail to your domain name POP eMail account and check it using Webmail.

Top of this page Dialup Accounts
If you are on a dialup account, make sure you are dialed on and connected to the Internet before you try to send or receive Domain Name eMail.

Top of this page DSL
Even though DSL (digital subscriber line) is fast and is becoming more popular every day, it is not a guaranteed service. If your eMail won't check or send, try navigating to a website with your web browser. Once on a web page, hold down the 'shift' key ('command' key on Mac) and click 'reload' or 'refresh' in your browser, to insure that the web page you are viewing is live on the Web and not being read from your browser's cache. If the web page does not 'force reload' per these instructions, your DSL is either down or your ethernet cable may be disconnected from your computer or DSL modem.

Top of this page CABLE
Cable Internet access can be extremely fast, faster than DSL. But unlike DSL, as simultaneous online users increase, cable service can slow down. If you experience intermittant speed fluctuations with cable internet access, chances are that it had to do with the increased number of users in your area at that specific time.

Top of this page Webmail
Messages sent to custom eMail boxes (you@YourDomain.com) are normally stored on our Web servers until users download eMail to their respective personal computers and read them using an eMail program such as Eudora, Outlook Express, or Outlook. Web-based eMail access allows users to read eMail that has not yet been downloaded to their personal computers using the Web-based interface. This feature is a great asset for people who are frequently away from their personal computers. Unlike Hotmail, Yahoo, and other Web-based eMail services, LA Servers Web-based interface reads your regular eMail. You don't need a separate eMail address for eMail accessed through the Web.

WEBMAIL NOTE: Webmail is intended to be used only when you are away from your computer and is NOT to be used to store eMail on the server. If you store mail on the server and you go over your disck space amount (50 MB by default) your email account will automatically become inactive until you delete old mail off the server.

Top of this page * IMPORTANT:
It is required that you use an eMail program that has the ability to send eMail from more than one POP account if you wish to check your Domain Name eMail and your ISP eMail.

Top of this page * AOL Note:
AOL is an online service and will only allow the sending of AOL eMail using the AOL application. Please see AOL - Internet on Training Wheels?

Top of this page AOL - Internet on Training Wheels?
For an experienced user, AOL puts a lot of distance between the person and the Internet. Surfing via AOL isn't like surfing from a computer that's just connected to the Internet and using, perhaps, Mozilla Firefox as a browser. Maybe you've always wondered about that wide world outside AOL's doors--or maybe not ...

THERE IS NO DOUBT that AOL is a great service and is responsible for much of the Internet's explosive growth. But there is likewise no doubt that using AOL is more like using the Internet with training wheels than connecting to the Net itself. After all, most of us started with training wheels but one day we realized we could ride the bike without them.

Yes, you can use AOL as an ISP without actually using the service by opening your own browser and mail program and minimizing AOL. That works pretty well for most--and it's what a lot of people do while traveling--but if you have your own domain/website, you might want to consider taking off the training wheels and using your own email program and web browser. (They're free and probably already installed on your computer) AOL is an online service and will only allow the sending and receiving of AOL eMail using the AOL application--you can't send or receive your own domain name email using AOL.

Top of this page I receive many bounced eMails to random users at my domain name that I didn't send. Why does this happen and how can this be remedied?
Your domain name has the 'catchall' function applied to it. This means that you receive "everything@YourDomain.com." The problem of receiving random users at your domain name eMail can be remedied by logging into your control panel and removing the catchall from the email account.

Top of this page I receive eMails that look like they were sent by me containing a virus attachment but I didn't send these eMails and I don't have a virus on my PC. What's the deal?
People using Windows based PCs catch viruses. Someone who has visited your website or has received an email from you in the past has a virus on their PC and their PC is silently eMailing out the virus from addresses found in (i.e.) their browser cache or eMail address book. These eMails look like they have been sent from other people (like you) but are really not. The person with the infected PC probably doesn't even know he/she has a virus. The only way to tell where the virus really came from is to view the extended eMail headers in the virus attached eMail.

Even though it is possible to create a virus that will affect other operating systems, it rarely happens because:

1. Windows is currently the most popular PC operating system and virus creators want to destroy as many computers as possible with their virus.
2. Windows is easily exploitable.

Make sure you don't have a virus on your PC by installing and regularly running virus detection software. And make sure you keep your virus definitions up to date so that new viruses are identified and repaired. Instructions for ridding your PC of spyware, adware, or viruses:

  • Check with Windows Update to make sure you have all the security and critical updates.
  • Download update and run Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad Aware (both are free downloads).
  • Download and update the programs, then restart in safe mode and run the virus scan and the 2 Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad Aware programs.
  • Then run all three programs AGAIN in normal mode.

If you are located in the Los Angeles area and need help ridding your PC of spyware, adware, or viruses, contact us.

Top of this page My domain eMail stopped working. Why?
If you are forwarding your domain name eMail to another account (like your Earthlink or Roadrunner account - your domain name eMail comes in when you check your other account) and you change ISPs, you need to login to your control panel and forward your domain name eMail to your new ISP eMail account.

Top of this page My domain name expired and I didn't know it. Why didn't I receive my domain renewal from LA Servers?
If you registered your domain name with LA Servers and you change contact eMail addresses, don't forget to login to our Domain Manager and update your eMail address so that the domain renewal notifications will reach you at your new eMail address. We suggest to always use an eMail address @YourDomain.com for your domain name contact eMail address to ensure that you will always receive the renewal notification even if you change ISPs. If your domain name contact record contains an outdated eMail address, the domain renewal notification will bounce and your domain name can expire without you knowing. To see what eMail address is associated with any domain name, use our Whois search tool. Also see SPAM BLOCKING below.

Top of this page Can I send a 50 MB attachment in an eMail?
Maybe but probably not. Many eMail boxes don't have that much allotted storage space and won't accept a huge attachment. Most POP accounts have a limit of between 1 and 50 MB of total space. If you send a large attachment, that eMail could become undeliverable, because of it's size, and bounce back to your POP In Box. This situation could lead to your POP account becoming locked up. The remedy is to use a free file transferring service like our DocXchange, DropLoad or YouSendIt.

Top of this page My web hosting account got terminated but I didn't receive my web hosting renewal from you. Why not?
Web hosting renewals are automated and send to the main User Email address set up in your control panel. You can change this Email address at any time through your control panel. If you have SPAM BLOCKING initiated on your eMail account(s), make sure you have added laservers.com to your Spam program's whitelist (addresses that you receive email from) so you receive renewal notices from us and there is no interruption of services because of not receiving the renewal notices. If you use AOL, add us to the list of people you can receive eMail from. This is your responsibilty!
